Element description

Knowledge

Overview of the major elements of corrosion control:

  • Basic corrosion chemistry as it applies to pipelines, buried, submerged and above-ground.

  • Primary and secondary controls basic measurement requirements of corrosion control system potentials.

  • Corrosion protection systems for pipelines and facilities including but not limited to permanent and temporary systems.

  • Interference testing requirements.

  • Pipeline coatings (internal and external, above and below ground).

  • Corrosion mechanisms and associated control techniques.

  • Pipeline coatings and their limitations.

  • Shielding.

  • Characteristics of coatings and corrosion on aging assets and impact on projected life.

  • Methods and assessment of corrosion defects.

  • Understanding and use of in-line inspection technologies and results.

  • LFI, earthing and fault current.

  • Impacts from stray currents.

  • Dosing systems and operation.

  • Microbial induced corrosion.

  • Stress corrosion cracking, HIC and lamination anomalies.

  • Basic coating failure modes.

Experience

Two or more of the following:

  • assist performing design, construction, commissioning and inspection of CP installations

  • assist in basic measurement of CP potentials and parameters

  • assist in identification of corrosion defects

  • assist in defining coating specification and inspections – buried and above-ground

  • observation and inspection of preparation methods prior to coating applications

  • observation and visual inspection of completed pipeline and joint coatings – buried and above-ground.

Expertise

Identifies and describes corrosion issues that may arise in design, construction and operations processes.

Identifies the role of corrosion engineers/specialists and appropriate competency requirements for technicians assistance in undertaking CP and corrosion related work.

Communicates effectively with corrosion control engineers as part of a team.

Resulting capabilities of competency
Capable of identifying potential for corrosion and its impact on particular pipelines and the function of CP systems and the implications for design, construction and operation of pipelines.
