Competency ID
and title

CC002 Cathodic protection systems

Competency area

Corrosion Control

Stream/s

Design, Operations

Level

Elective

Competency descriptor
This competency requires a pipeline engineer to have a sound understanding of the principles of cathodic protection as applied to steel pipelines.

Competency application
This competency enables a pipeline engineer (i) to oversee the design of cathodic protection to pipelines and the various requirements to ensure that such systems are satisfactorily provided or (ii) to oversee the monitoring of the cathodic protection system of a pipeline to ensure it is meeting its design requirements, and fault finding and resolution of faults. This will include delegation of responsibilities to appropriately competent colleagues or contractors.

Prerequisites
CC001 – Corrosion control fundamentals

Element description

Knowledge

AS 2885.1 and AS 2855.3 sections relevant to CP systems.

Overview of:

·         Design and application of CP to pipelines.

·         CP operating requirements and limitations.

·         Relationship between CP and selected coating system.

·         Types of CP systems and their advantages/disadvantages e.g. Galvanic verses Impressed current.

·         Types of power supplies.

·         Stray currents, telluric activity and DC traction drainage systems.

·         Test methods, data logging, interference testing and instrumentation.

·         Impacts of foreign structures.

·         Statutory permit requirements.

·         Application of CP Audits and CP system testing (e.g. CP surveys, CIPS, DCVG testing etc.).

·         Monitoring of operation of the cathodic protection system to ensure it operates as designed.

·         Identification and rectification of faults on operating cathodic protection systems.

Experience

Member of a team responsible for design, installation and commissioning of cathodic protection systems OR

Member of a team responsible for inspection, operations and/or maintenance of cathodic protection systems. Testing cathodic protection systems.

Taking CP potential reads.

Expertise

Recognises the role of cathodic protection systems in corrosion prevention on pipelines and understands the regulatory requirements for cathodic protection specifically in relation to hydrocarbon pipelines.

Recognises the pipeline design and operational requirements necessary to design an effective cathodic protection system.

Identifies the options for cathodic protection and describe the associated benefits/disadvantages.

Identifies when it is appropriate to delegate responsibility to competent persons and the competencies they require

Interprets and report on the effectiveness (or otherwise) of operational CP systems and recommend/implement appropriate repairs and/or improvements.

Resulting capabilities of competency
Capable of being responsible for cathodic protection work undertaken by corrosion specialists in pipeline design, construction and operations and maintenance phases of a pipeline.
