Competency descriptor
This competency requires a pipeline engineer to have fundamental understanding of the broad range of construction engineering issues that may arise during pipeline construction.

Competency application
This competency will enable a pipeline engineer to recognise the issues that may arise during pipeline construction and the engineering principles used to manage them. This basic knowledge and understanding can then be taken into account as part of the range of engineering tasks the engineer may have, whether for design, construction or operations.

Overview of main matters of concern for construction engineering and management:

·         legal requirements and practical procedures for site safety management, including permits to work and traffic management

Experience

One or two site visits that involve sufficient time to experience a range of site activities.

Expertise

Ability to identify, understand and communicate about the range of issues for which engineering and management understanding and expertise will be required for construction of a pipeline.

Resulting capabilities of competency
Capable of providing useful and beneficial support to the construction manager in whatever task the pipeline engineer has been delegated.

Incorporates understanding of the issues and needs of construction staff in other aspects of the pipeline design and operations.
