ECMC communique a positive step toward gas infrastructure investment certainty

The Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA) welcomes the Energy and Climate Ministerial Council's (ECMC) communique that says any design of an east coast domestic gas reservation must support the vital infrastructure investment needed to deliver gas where and when Australian homes and businesses need it.

APGA chief executive Steve Davies said gas storage and transport infrastructure was critical to making a domestic gas reservation scheme work in practice, and to underpinning Australia's energy security.

"Reserving gas is one half of the equation. Delivering it is the other," Mr Davies said.

"Delivering a workable reservation scheme will require billions of dollars of investment in storage and transport infrastructure, and small, commonsense reforms to policy settings are what will help unlock it."

"Reforms to the Form of Regulation Reviews process are exactly the kind of practical lever that can bring forward the infrastructure investment a reservation scheme depends on."

Mr Davies said market certainty was the foundation of every multi-decade, multi-billion-dollar pipeline and storage investment, and today’s communique was a positive step toward building that confidence.

"Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania depend on firm pipeline capacity from the north, expanded storage, and a stable policy environment that brings investment forward."

APGA looks forward to continuing to work with the Federal Government and the states and territories to ensure the reservation can help deliver the affordable, reliable gas supply Australians have been promised.
