Code of Practice for Renewable Gas Connections
Version 1
Download a copy of the Code
As Australia transitions towards a low-carbon future, renewable gases like biomethane and hydrogen are set to play a pivotal role in decarbonising our energy systems. This Code of Practice provides comprehensive guidance for renewable gas producers, gas distributors, transmission pipeline operators, and stakeholders involved in the safe and reliable integration of renewable gases into the Australian gas network.
This document outlines the technical, safety, and commercial considerations required to connect renewable gas production facilities to gas distribution networks and pipelines. It aims to support compliance with Australian standards and international best practices while ensuring the ongoing safety and reliability of our gas infrastructure.
Whether you are involved in designing, constructing, or operating renewable gas facilities, this Code will serve as a valuable reference to navigate the processes of feasibility assessments, connection design, gas quality management, and compliance requirements.
We encourage all stakeholders to utilise this Code to facilitate the sustainable growth of the renewable gas industry in Australia and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of the APGA Code of Practice for Renewable Gas Connections is to provide guidance to gas distributors, transmission pipeline operators, renewable gas producers, and other stakeholders on the requirements and processes for safely and reliably connecting renewable gas production facilities to Australia's gas distribution networks and pipelines. It focuses on the integration of renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, into existing gas infrastructure to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Australia’s transition to a low-carbon energy future.
The scope of the document covers technical, safety, and commercial aspects, including gas quality specifications, facility design, network capacity, pipeline infrastructure, metering, and commercial arrangements. It applies to both new and existing connections, addressing both brownfield and greenfield projects, and provides a framework for compliance with Australian standards and regulations. The document also supports both the blending of renewable gases with natural gas and the dedicated transportation of renewable gases.
What is Renewable Gas
Renewable gas refers to gases which do not produce any additional carbon emissions when used. Common forms of renewable gas include renewable hydrogen and biomethane, shown in Figure 1 below.
