The Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA) say Victorians overwhelmingly want the choice to connect gas in their homes, with new polling showing strong support across every major demographic.
The RedBridge survey of 1,006 Victorian voters found 68 per cent of Victorians believe anyone building or buying a new home should have the choice to get gas connected, with just 14 per cent opposed. Support was net positive among voters of every political party, age group, region and household type surveyed.
By contrast, only one in five Victorians (20 per cent) support banning gas connections to new homes, with opponents (53 per cent) outnumbering supporters by more than two to one.
APGA chief executive Steve Davies says the results showed Victorians had made up their minds.
"We went looking for a group of Victorians who want this decision taken out of their hands. We couldn't find any," Mr Davies said.
"This isn’t a city-versus-country or a young-versus-old issue. Victorians have reached the same conclusion: households should decide how they cook and heat their homes, not have that decision made for them."
Four in five Victorian homes are connected to gas, and the survey was conducted against a backdrop of sustained cost-of-living pressure on households across the state.
"Victorians are carefully watching every dollar, and they are telling us in overwhelming numbers what they want from energy policy. Keep the focus on making energy affordable and reliable and leave the choice between gas and electric appliances where it belongs, with each individual household," Mr Davies said.
APGA congratulates the Hon Jaclyn Symes MLC on her appointment to the energy, climate and resources portfolio and look forward to working with the Minister and her office on delivering the least-cost energy transition.
The survey of 1,006 Victorian voters was conducted between 6 and 12 July 2026, with quotas and weighting applied to ensure the sample reflects the Victorian electorate.
