Practical lessons and shared experience at the APGA HSE Seminar

The APGA HSE Seminar brought members together in Brisbane to share experience, explore workplace responsibilities and learn from practical examples of safety and environmental improvement.

The day demonstrated the value of members contributing their knowledge and taking an active role in industry learning. From award-winning project presentations to an engaging mock court, the seminar provided opportunities to consider how lessons from across the sector can inform everyday decisions.

Bringing workplace responsibilities into the courtroom

A highlight of the seminar was the mock court, which explored a scenario involving driver fatigue and vehicle maintenance failures. By demonstrating how these issues could be examined during court proceedings, the session brought the legal, regulatory and operational consequences of workplace decisions into focus.

The format encouraged participants to consider how actions, records and decisions might be questioned following an incident. It also provided an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities held by individuals and organisations, and the importance of putting sound safety practices into action.

Much of the session’s impact came from the members who took on roles within the proceedings. Their willingness to participate, commitment to their characters and level of engagement helped make the exercise a compelling learning experience.

APGA sincerely thanks everyone who contributed to the mock court. Those in attendance could see the value of exploring these responsibilities through a practical demonstration, and following its strong reception, the format is likely to return next year.

Learning from award-winning projects

The seminar also provided an opportunity to hear from AGIG, winner of the 2026 APGA Safety Award, and AusNet, winner of the 2026 APGA Environment Award, following their recognition at the APGA Convention in Darwin.

Their presentations took attendees beyond the award announcements to explore the work and effort behind their projects. Sharing that experience gave participants a closer look at the thinking and practical delivery involved, with lessons to consider within their own organisations.

APGA thanks both AGIG and AusNet for contributing to the seminar and making their experience available to the wider industry. The value of these awards extends through opportunities like this, where recognised achievements become a starting point for further discussion and learning.

Member contributions that strengthen the industry

The HSE Seminar highlighted how much the industry gains when members share their experience openly. Presenting a project, contributing to a discussion or taking on a role in a practical exercise all help others examine their own approaches and identify opportunities for improvement.

Thank you to the APGA HSE Committee, speakers, presenters and participants who contributed their time and expertise to the day, and to the organisations that supported their involvement.

Their contributions made the seminar an engaging forum for shared learning and reinforced the importance of continued collaboration on health, safety and environmental performance across the pipeline and gas industry.
