I was only in the room for a few minutes to take photos, but the energy was impossible to miss.
The conversations were open, thoughtful and deeply engaged. Participants were not simply listening to course material; they were examining themselves, their careers, their expectations and what they wanted to gain from the experience.
Even in that brief period, it was clear that something meaningful was taking place.
That depth of conversation can only be achieved when participants are willing to engage honestly and when the facilitator has created an environment where people feel supported to reflect, contribute and challenge themselves.
This was the setting for the latest cohort of APGA’s Women’s Leadership Development Forum, held in Brisbane on 22 and 23 July 2026.
The Forum is one of the most distinctive professional development programs offered by APGA. Developed specifically for women working across the pipeline and gas infrastructure industry, it goes well beyond conventional leadership training.
The program provides participants with the time, structure and support to take a deep and considered look at themselves and their careers. It asks them to reflect on their strengths, ambitions, expectations, professional identity and the contribution they want to make within their organisations and the broader industry.
These are not always easy conversations to have.
The demands of day-to-day work rarely create the space required for this level of reflection. The Forum gives participants permission to step back, consider where they are, identify where they want to go and think more deliberately about what may be required to get there.
The quality of the discussion witnessed in the room reflected the maturity of a program that has been refined through multiple iterations. Each cohort has helped shape and strengthen the offering, creating a learning experience that is increasingly relevant, practical and responsive to the realities faced by women working within the industry.
It also demonstrated the importance of expert facilitation.
Gretchen Gagel continues to bring the Forum to life through APGA. Her ability to guide difficult and meaningful conversations, respond to the dynamics of the group and ensure participants feel both challenged and supported is central to the program’s success.
Effective facilitation is not simply about presenting material. It is about creating the conditions in which participants feel comfortable enough to be open, while maintaining the structure and purpose required to ensure that openness leads to meaningful learning.
That balance was clearly present throughout the room.
The impact of a program such as the Women’s Leadership Development Forum extends well beyond the two days of training. By helping participants better understand their strengths, articulate their ambitions and approach their careers with greater clarity and confidence, the Forum can influence teams, workplaces and organisations across the sector.
The relationships formed through the program also create valuable professional networks and a shared understanding among women working across different parts of the industry.
APGA thanks Gretchen for her continued commitment and expert facilitation, and the latest cohort for the openness, energy and willingness they brought to the first stage of the program.
We look forward to seeing the relationships, insights and momentum created in Brisbane continue to develop throughout the remaining program engagements.
